“Marcus said Facebook will experiment with ways to generate revenue from Messenger, but is not in a hurry to do so. “We’ll try different things and hopefully we’ll find something that solves a real problem for people using the service and eventually for businesses on the other side,” he said.
He said Facebook was looking to Asia for examples of how messaging services generate revenue. “In Asia there are messaging apps that sell content, and some in China that have whole ecosystems of commerce on the apps,” he said.
“We don’t want to put advertising all over the place. We don’t want to make the experience feel like you’re being invaded by ads and different things,” Marcus continued. “That’s not the approach.” He said advertising could take different forms, including sponsored content”.
